The Church of England’s General Synod has approved a £1.6 billion funding package for the 2026–28 period—marking a 36% increase from the previous triennium. The new funding will support clergy pensions and wellbeing, assist parishes in low-income areas, and expand safeguarding and redress programs.

Plans include an independent review into clergy retirement support and potential restitution for affected pensioners. Synod will revisit the proposals in February 2026.

In addition, Synod passed the National Church Governance Measure, initiating a major restructuring of the Church’s national institutions. Two existing bodies—the Archbishops’ Council and Church of England Central Services—will be replaced by a new charity, Church of England National Services (CENS).

The Bishop of Guildford, Andrew Watson, said the reforms aim to restore trust, increase transparency, and improve support for parishes, schools, and communities.
