Despite the growing availability of digital giving tools, most U.S. Protestant churches still prefer passing a physical offering plate during worship services.
Recent research shows that around two-thirds of pastors report using the traditional plate method, while many churches also place collection boxes near entrances or exits. Only a small number of churches rely solely on digital options, with just 1% saying they offer no opportunity to give in person.
Denominational practices vary—Lutheran and Methodist churches are the most likely to pass a plate, while non-denominational churches are less likely. Cultural and generational factors also play a role. African American pastors are more likely to use the offering plate than their white counterparts, and younger pastors often lean toward using collection boxes.
Some churches intentionally avoid the plate to reduce feelings of guilt or pressure, while others see value in the public, communal aspect of physically giving during worship.
Regardless of the method, the overwhelming majority of churches continue to offer in-person giving as a meaningful part of their weekly services.
